How is The Oaks At Point South? First, let me explain a little bit about us and what we look for in a park. We are a full-time RV couple with no kids or pets. We tend to work during the week and explore on the weekends. We like to participate in some of the activities at the campgrounds and walk around in the evenings. Full hookups and good internet/cell connection are a very high priority for us.
When did we go? 3/6/22-3/24/22 & 10/22/22-10/29/22
The basics – There are just over 90 sites and all are 50 amp full hookups. No complaints with water. There is very little to do close to this campground, but there is a pond to walk around. There ARE gators and snakes around the pond, so be cautious. We only ever saw the gators in the water though. It is included in the Thousand Trails membership and is a Thousand Trails park.
Amenities & activities in the park – There are a few here and there, but we did not go to any at either stay.
Activities outside of the park – There are SO many things to do if you drive. You’re about an hour and a half from Charleston, SC, and just under an hour to Savannah. During our March 2022 stay, we did lots of exploring on the weekends. This is a great hub for checking out filming locations for Forrest Gump as well. On our first weekend, we visited Hunting Island State Park and drove over the bridge where Forrest was interviewed during his running days. The State Park itself is a really neat stop being right on the ocean and lots to see at the lighthouse area. This area is close to where the Vietnam and shrimp boat sequences take place in the movie.
On another weekend, we drove down to watch the sunrise at Hilton Head Beach. This was a really beautiful beach and the area walking up to it was lovely too. After that, we drove into Savannah and walked around a little bit. We got to see the park where Forrest’s bench was set up for the movie, which was great.
Groceries – This is a little out-of-the-way campground, so you will need to drive a good way to stores. We shopped at Walmart about 45 minutes away and stopped at Aldi on the way back from Savannah, also about 45 minutes away.
Restaurants – We also had AMAZING grits at Beedos, which is on the way to the Hunting Island State Park. We had breakfast at Kenny B’s, which had a really fun New Orleans vibe, right next to the parking lot at Hilton Head.
What we’ll do next time – There are a lot of cool things to do within driving distance. I’d love to check out the Frampton Plantation House, which is a museum/welcome center-type place. Crazy we never went with how long we’ve stayed at this campground and the fact that it’s right around the corner. I’d also like to check out the Forrest Gump driveway.
