Full time RV costs can range so much, it can be hard to give an accurate number, but you can have a framework to start calculating your numbers.

This is what we actually spent in October 2022. I’ll go into detail on why each was what it was and any fluctuations we found.

Category Spent in October 2022
RV and vehicle payments $1,379
Camping costs $141.69
Groceries $536
Phone and internet $228
Fuel & DEF $650
RV miles driven 1414.6 miles
Memberships & Tolls $230
Entertainment/fun/eating out $651
Health insurance $403
Various normal expenses $0
Total spent $4,218.69

A few notes – I’m not including the costs of our businesses (because that can vary greatly and you may not be running a business out of your RV) or our rental (previously our home). These are just our full time RV costs for the month.

Where were we:

We started the month at PA Dutch Country RV Resort in Manheim, PA a quick overnight at Hangman Brewery (a Harvest Host in DE) to Hershey RV & Camping Resort in Lebanon, PA to Granite Hill Camping Resort in Gettysburg, PA to a family member’s property in Slanesville, WV to Lake Gaston RV & Camping Resort in Littleton, NC to The Oaks at Point South in Yemassee, SC to Lake Magic RV Resort in Clermont, FL to finish the month.

What did we do:

October was a VERY busy month! We moved EIGHT times and drove 1,414.6 miles. Thankfully our huge grocery hauls helped to offset the fuel costs. After two years on the road and now our third winter in Florida, we feel the most at home in the Orlando area. It feels SO good to be “home.” While we moved around a lot this month, we didn’t actually DO much. We saw a few friends at campgrounds and only went out a few times.

We have used RV Trip Wizard to plan every trip since we got on the road in November 2020. We love RV Life so much that we have partnered with them. If you’re looking for a planner for your RV trip, this is what we use!

RV LIFE Trip Wizard

 RV and vehicle costs

We spent $1379. This includes the payment for our truck, which is $979.35 each month and our rig, which is $399.88 per month. We have a seven year loan on the truck and a twenty year loan on the RV.

Camping costs

This was $141.69 for the month. We stayed in Thousand Trails campgrounds most of the month. We stayed at a campground outside of Thousand Trails but we paid for that last year. The $76.69 is our monthly cost for our annual dues. We also hit our annual review, which was an additional $65.00.

Groceries

Our groceries were $536, which wasn’t AS much lower than I had expected, but we needed a few things when we arrived in Florida. We did find another scratch and dent grocery store here, but haven’t checked it out yet. This does include shopping at Walmart, which sometimes includes purchasing things for the RV such as toilet paper.

Phone and internet/hotspots

We spent $228 on our phones and internet. We have an unlimited plan through Verizon for our phones which is $116.85. We have a 100 gig hotspot plan with T-Mobile which is $57 a month and a 100 gig hotspot plan with Cricket which is $55 a month.

Fuel & DEF

We paid $650 for fuel this month. We moved all the way from PA to Florida, so we weren’t surprised by the bigger cost. Definitely looking forward to our time in Florida where we won’t be moving as much or as far.

Memberships & Tolls

We spent $230 in memberships and tolls. Our Escapees membership renewal came up and I needed to add some to our mail scanning account.

Entertainment/fun/eating out

We spent $651 on fun this month. A big part of this was the renewal of my Disney World annual pass, which was $361.04.

Health insurance

My health insurance was $403 for the month.

Various normal expenses

Total spent was $0.

I tend to just toss everything that doesn’t fit into a category in here. So a trip to Target may be groceries, clothes, and fun, but it ends up here.

I want these posts to help guide you as you plan to hit the road full time, to see other budgets when you’re already full time or show you that maybe this isn’t the life for you. Did I answer all your questions? Do you have any more? Let me know in the comments below!
